How to Watch Apple's Sept. 12 'Gather Round' Event on Your Computer, Smartphone, or Apple TV

Apple revealed three new iPhone models on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at its "Gather Round" event in Cupertino, as well as announced the official release date of iOS 12, its newest mobile operating system. If you missed it and want to watch the full event, here's how to do it on your computer, smartphone, or Apple TV.

Aside from two iPhone X successors, the XS and XS Max, and one low-cost imitation, the iPhone XR, Apple also revealed an updated Apple Watch and mentioned the final release dates for macOS Mojave (10.14) and watchOS 5, as well as tvOS 12. So there's plenty to watch. Apple uploaded the complete event to its YouTube, which you can watch right here:

When Did the Event Start?

The event was held at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park, which is in Cupertino, California, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018. The following list reports the times Apple's video stream went live that day in different areas of the US.

  • 7 a.m. HST
  • 9 a.m. AKDT
  • 10 a.m. PDT or MST
  • 11 a.m. MDT
  • 12 p.m. CDT
  • 1 p.m. EDT

All the usual suspects were there to talk at this event, either in person or via video trailers, including Tim Cook, chief executive officer, Philip W. Schiller, senior vice president of world marketing, and Johnny Ive, chief design officer.

What Were the Requirements for Watching Online?

To have watched Apple's livestream when it originally aired, you would have needed to have one of the following:

  • iPad, iPhone, iPod touch using Safari on iOS 10 or later
  • Mac using Safari on macOS Sierra 10.12 or later
  • PC using Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
  • Apple TV, second generation and later running the latest tvOS software

Apple also stated that you may have been able to use recent versions of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox that support MSE (Media Serice Extensions) as well as H.264 (video) and AAC (audio) formats. Other modern web browsers that support those requirements should have also worked. This essentially means you could watch the livestream feed from any Android device as well.

  • Android devices with the latest software updates and compatible browser
  • Amazon Kindle devices with latest software updates and compatible browser

How Could You Watch the Event?

If you planned on watching the "Gather Round" event on your computer or smartphone went it originally aired, you would use the appropriate web browser mentioned above for your device and visit the link below. (Now you can just watch the video embedded above.)

For those of you who were watching from an Apple TV, you could have used AirPlay to stream the event as long as you had the latest tvOS software on Apple TV generation 2 or higher. On the second and third generation Apple TVs, you could also have tuned in via the Apple Events channel. And for those with an Apple TV fourth and fifth generation, you could have used the Apple Events app.

  • Apple TV 2 and later via AirPlay
  • Apple TV 2/3 from the Apple Events channel
  • Apple TV 4/5 using the Apple Events app

What Was Revealed?

As already mentioned, Apple showed off two iPhone X successors, the iPhone XS and XS Max, as well as a low-cost LCD model with multiple colors available, called either the iPhone XR. A new Apple Watch design was also be highlighted, as well as software updates for iOS, tvOS, watchOS, and macOS. What was glaringly missing was the AirPower wireless charging pad Apple announced about a year ago.
