Apple's big iOS 17 software update for iPhone was released on September 18, and it will continue to test iOS 17 point releases as betas beforehand until iOS 18 comes out next year. But does your iPhone work with iOS 17 or any iOS 17.x releases to come? Apple kicked three iPhone models to the curb, limiting them to the latest iOS 16 updates.

The older iPhone models that are not supported on iOS 17 include the following, which will receive their latest software update, iOS 16.7, shortly after iOS 17.0's stable release:

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 8

That means only the iPhone XS and newer iPhone models are compatible:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS

If you have one of the three iPhone models incompatible with iOS 17 or later, you'll have to upgrade your iOS device to one of the supported models above.
