Apple announced the new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro series models on Sept. 9, and the focus on this year's smartphones was Apple Intelligence with an even smarter Siri. But generative artificial intelligence isn't the only new feature these devices come with. There are improved cameras, more advanced processors, new buttons, and more.

At the "It's Glowtime" event on Monday, Sept. 9, Apple showed off the new iPhone lineup and other devices, including new Apple Watch and AirPods models. As for the new iPhones, here was the release schedule:

  • Sept. 9: Announcement
  • Sept. 13: Preorders
  • Sept. 20: Release

There are four new iPhone models with different starting prices. All models start at the same price as last year's iPhone 15 series lineup:

iPhone 16:

  • $799 (128 GB)
  • $899 (256 GB)
  • $1,099 (512 GB)

iPhone 16 Plus:

  • $899 (128 GB)
  • $999 (256 GB)
  • $1,199 (512 GB)

iPhone 16 Pro:

  • $999 (128GB)
  • $1,099 (256 GB)
  • $1,299 (512 GB)
  • $1,499 (1 TB)

iPhone 16 Pro Max:

  • $1,199 (256 GB)
  • $1,399 (512 GB)
  • $1,599 (1 TB)

Preorders began on Friday, Sept. 13 (yes, Friday the 13th), at 5:00 a.m. PDT (8:00 a.m. EDT), and you could order them from Apple and wireless carriers, such as below. While the prices above reflect unlocked devices, carriers ran deals for locked versions. On the Apple Store, there were trade-in offers of up to $900 off with iPhone 12 and newer for the iPhone 16 models and up to $1,000 for iPhone 12 Pro or newer for the iPhone 16 Pro models.

Before preorders began, users could get their preorder ready right beforehand at the Apple Store online or in the Apple Store app. They could pick the model, color, and storage size, add a trade-in offer, choose a payment or finance method, pick a carrier or go unlocked, and add AppleCare+ coverage, then save their preorder. Preorder readiness was not available when using Apple Store's military, veteran, or other discount programs.

Trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested Apple will end up shipping 88–89 million units in 2024, but that only 15–17 million would be available for preorders, with about 8–10 million more becoming available on the release date. It's not clear yet if those numbers panned out.

You can rewatch Apple's keynote announcement from Monday, Sept. 9, on Apple's website or on YouTube (see video below).
