The new iOS 16 update was released on Sept. 12, 2022, and there are more than a few iPhone models that didn't make the cut. And for the first time, the iPod touch is left entirely off the compatibility list.
When iOS 15 came out, it supported all of the devices its predecessor, iOS 14, supported. But the same cannot be said between iOS 16 and iOS 15. The iPod touch (7th generation) is finally retired from new major updates, which is not surprising considering Apple discontinued the iPod line in May 2022.
The biggest news is that five iPhone models with a Home button can no longer update past the latest iOS 15 software. That leaves only four iPhone models with a Home button and Touch ID that can upgrade to the iOS 16 firmware: the iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.
It's always possible that the surviving Home button models will be retired in the following major update, iOS 17, but it's too early to talk about that yet. In the meantime, here's the complete list of what devices iOS 16 does and doesn't support:
