When it comes to filters, Snapchat is no slouch. The chat app's array of effects rivals even the fiercest competition from filter masters like Instagram. Now, the company has a new trick up its sleeve that adds depth to your selfies (and even more new filters), and that feature is called 3D Camera Mode, available for iPhone models with the TrueDepth camera used for Face ID.
Currently, the only iPhone models with the TrueDepth camera system are the iPhone X, XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. It's a bummer, but there is a silver lining: all Snapchat-compatible smartphones will be able to view these effects without a hitch. We're sure Snapchat is working on bringing the feature to more phones in the future but, for now, an iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max could be a worthy upgrade for your aging iPhone.
If you have an iPhone with Face ID and the TrueDepth system, it can be tricky to figure out how to enable the new 3D Camera Mode. First, switch over to the front-facing camera, then tap the down arrow below the flash, and hit "3D." Tada!
Wait, nothing's different. That's because you need to take a selfie before the effect takes shape. Once you do, you'll instantly see how "3D" has changed things.
As you move your iPhone around, you'll slightly move yourself around as well. The effect isn't perfect, but it's pretty neat. Better yet, you can simply swipe on-screen to cycle through different filters. These filters range from basic color effects to full-blown 3D frames that move with you.
